African Grey Parrots Summer Food Lists


African Grey Parrots are not very selective about their feeding habits. They are considered omnivores and they can eat vegetables, fruits and meat. Different parrot lovers  have different views about feeding and nutrition of these parrots. The most important thing is to provide a balanced diet that fulfils all body requirements.

In nature, palm fruit oil seeds are common in their basic diet. Their metabolism and digestive system is adapted to this type of food very high in calories. It follows that even in captivity these birds not no tendency to obesity.

A good and commonly used way to make a balanced feed to African Greys is to mix some fruits and vegetable. Pellet sized chopped mixture is easy to eat for these parrots. Some vegetables contain more nutrients and some contain less so giving a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits is good.

Water:

Ample amount of cool and fresh water is also important for African grey parrots. They drink water after every meal. Water should not contain particles/traces of heavy metals because they are very toxic to parrots.

Vitamins:

Most of the vitamin are present in vegetable and fruits and it’s not very important to give vitamin supplements. The most important vitamin that is mostly deficient in parrots is Vitamin-A that’s why beta-carotene vegetables should be provided.

Calcium:

African Grey Parrots need more calcium as compared to other parrots and bird. A calcium block can be placed inside the cage. You can also add bone dry powdered block in order to provide an adequate intake of calcium. It is essential for healthy bones, nerve and heart function, muscle contraction and blood clotting. He also needs vitamin D3 to help absorb calcium. In summer, outside, the sun will provide his daily requirement of vitamin D3.
